Society for Experimental Mechanics Books

SEM Books is a unique co-publication between the Society for Experimental Mechanics and Morgan & Claypool Publishers. We would like to invite you to showcase your work and contribute your expertise by writing a short book of 50-150 pages (tutorial, modular, textbook, survey, monograph, etc.) for the Synthesis/SEM Lectures on Experimental Mechanics series. If you are interested in joining this series, please contact the Executive Editor: Paul Petralia.

The topics for the series follow the technical divisions and the direction of the SEM including all other emerging areas of experimental mechanics such as Additive and Adaptive Manufacturing, Substructuring, etc.

Biological Systems and Materials
Dynamics of Civil Structures
Composite, Hybrid & Multifunctional Materials
Dynamic Behavior of Materials
Fracture and Fatigue

Structure-Property Relationships under Extreme Dynamic Environments Structure-Property Relationships under Extreme Dynamic Environments
Cyril L. Williams
The inelastic response and residual mechanical properties acquired from most shock compressed solids are quite different from those acquired from quasi-static or moderate strain rates. For instance, the residual hardness of many shock compressed meta…

The Old and the New... The Old and the New…
Cesar A. Sciammarella, Kristin B. Zimmerman
The field of Experimental Mechanics has evolved substantially over the past 100 years. In the early years, the field was primarily comprised of applied physicists, civil engineers, railroad engineers, and mechanical engineers. The field defined itsel…

Hole-Drilling Method Hole-Drilling Method
Gary S. Schajer, Philip S. Whitehead
This book describes the theory and practice of the Hole-Drilling Method for measuring residual stresses in engineering components. Such measurements are important because residual stresses have a “hidden” character because they exist locked-in within…
